FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP (Somerset County) — Singer/actress Adrienne Bailon stepped off the stage and onto the tennis court today at Inman Park in Franklin to promote Arthur Ashe Kids Day, which will take place Saturday in Flushing Meadows Park, N.Y.

Bailon, known for her work on the Disney Channel as one of the Cheetah Girls and as a member of singing group 3LW, said she hoped the family-friendly event at the site of the U.S. Open will draw kids into music and tennis.

Also on hand today to help young players find and improve their tennis swings was Larry Dillon, president of Sports for Life Inc.

Established in 1998, the New Brunswick-based nonprofit provides tennis education and instruction to residents of all ages and skill levels in Franklin, New Brunswick and Piscataway.

Dillon said the sport helps children grow personally, emotionally and athletically.

“We’re always looking to expose the kids to positive experiences and tennis helps them in other aspects of their lives,” he said. “Whether it’s teaching them focus, dedication, or how to take a loss, we try to make sure that they learn something that they can use on and off the court.”

Even in sky high beige heels and a belted layer dress, Bailon was able to win four games in a row against some enthusiastic young players.

“I think it’s great for kids to be passionate about something and getting them involved with a sport at a young age helps them make friends out here on the court and it gives them something that they can perfect,” she said. “That way they have something that they can be proud of.”

Loren Dent, 16, hasn’t played in a few years, but got a chance to team up with the star during a rally with coaches.

“We were on the same level of play, so it wasn’t intimidating,” she said. “It was really fun.”

Dillon said he was proud to educate kids about Ashe’s achievements in tennis and civil rights.

“It makes them feel special because they get to learn about someone who’s done so much for the world of tennis and civil rights started out just like them,” he said.

The commemorative day honors the legacy of Ashe who in 1975 became the first African-American to win the Wimbledon Championship as well as an inductee into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, R.I, in 1985.

A civil rights activist, Ashe founded Artists and Athletes Against apartheid, which lobbied for sanctions and embargoes against the South African government to end apartheid in 1983. He also founded the Institute for Urban Health in 1992, which helped address inadequate health care delivery to urban minority populations.

He’s such a great contributor, so he’s a great role model to follow in terms of how to live your life,” Dillon said. “I can’t think of too many people who would be better to emulate.”

The Aug. 28 event is a full-day tennis and music fest where fans will get to meet tennis superstars Rafael Nadal, Andy Roddick, Roger Federer and musicians including the Jonas Brothers, Demi Lovato, David Archuleta and Shontelle.

“It’s free and it really gives the kids a chance to come out and enjoy some great music and play some tennis, I think it’s always great to have kids do something positive,” Bailon said.
